WHAT IS OCARINA OF TIME?
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time follows Link as he becomes caught up in Ganondorf’s attempt to obtain the Triforce and take control of Hyrule.
Originally released for the Nintendo 64 in 1998, the game brought the Zelda formula into a fully 3D world, combining exploration, combat, puzzles, dungeons, items, and a story that unfolds across different periods of Link’s life.
The Nintendo Switch 2 version rebuilds the classic adventure with modern presentation and controls while retaining the world, characters, and core adventure that made Ocarina of Time a landmark Zelda game.
HYRULE

Hyrule is the center of Link’s adventure, connecting forests, fields, mountains, lakes, villages, towns, and dungeons.
From Kokiri Forest and Hyrule Field to Death Mountain, Lake Hylia, the Gerudo Desert, and beyond, each part of Hyrule introduces its own characters, challenges, secrets, and discoveries.
The Nintendo Switch 2 version also expands the presentation of Hyrule with remodeled locations, additional environmental details, improved camera movement, and a day and night cycle that continues throughout the world.
COMBAT
Combat in Ocarina of Time combines Link’s sword, shield, items, movement, and targeting system to create a foundation for fighting in a 3D environment.
The game’s Z-targeting system helped establish a new approach to 3D combat, allowing Link to focus on individual enemies while moving around them.
The Nintendo Switch 2 version also introduces enhanced movement and camera controls, including the ability to jump and dash and use the Right Stick for camera control.
TIME

Time is one of the defining ideas of Ocarina of Time.
Link begins his adventure as a child before eventually becoming the Hero of Time, creating two different periods of Hyrule that players must navigate throughout the story.
The changes between these eras affect the world, its characters, its challenges, and Link’s progression, making time an important part of both the story and the game’s design.
THE OCARINA OF TIME

The Ocarina of Time is one of the most important items in Link’s adventure.
Throughout the journey, Link learns songs that can affect the world around him and help him progress through different parts of the adventure.
The Nintendo Switch 2 version also introduces new ways to interact with the game’s ocarina music. Players can hum learned melodies for Link to perform, while compatible playable and electric ocarinas can also interact with the game.
DUNGEONS
Ocarina of Time’s dungeons combine exploration, combat, puzzles, keys, items, and major boss encounters into some of the game’s most memorable challenges.
Each dungeon introduces its own environment and mechanics, often requiring Link to use newly acquired items in creative ways.
They remain an important part of the game’s progression and provide some of the clearest examples of how the traditional Zelda formula was adapted for three dimensions.
ITEMS & EXPLORATION
Link’s adventure is built around discovering new items and learning how they interact with the world.
Weapons, equipment, bottles, musical instruments, and other tools can open new paths, solve puzzles, defeat enemies, and reveal areas that were previously inaccessible.
Exploration rewards players who pay attention to their surroundings, revisit familiar locations, and experiment with the tools they collect.
ZELDA NOTES
ZELDA NOTES is a game-specific service available through the Nintendo Switch App for compatible smart devices.
The Ocarina of Time version includes features such as a chronological record of accomplishments, location-finding challenges, a virtual ocarina, daily quizzes, and additional ways to interact with the adventure.
The feature gives the 2026 version another layer beyond the original game, connecting the adventure on Nintendo Switch 2 with a compatible smart device.
THREADS OF TIME
The Nintendo Switch 2 version introduces Threads of Time as a new way to follow Link’s progress through the adventure.
Players can check their progress in the story and their next objective, while a large tapestry gradually fills in as the journey continues.
The feature builds on one of Ocarina of Time’s defining ideas, giving players a visual way to follow the story as Link moves through the different stages of his adventure.
LINK, ZELDA, & GANONDORF
At the center of Ocarina of Time is the relationship between Link, Princess Zelda, and Ganondorf.
Ganondorf seeks the Triforce and the power of the Sacred Realm, while Link becomes the hero who must stop him and protect Hyrule.
Their roles connect the game’s personal journey with the larger conflict surrounding the kingdom, the Triforce, and the passage of time.
THE WORLD OF OCARINA OF TIME

Ocarina of Time’s world is designed around discovery.
Locations are connected through Hyrule Field, while towns, villages, dungeons, and hidden areas provide different environments and challenges. Characters encountered throughout the adventure also help make Hyrule feel like a world beyond Link’s immediate quest.
The combination of exploration, environmental puzzles, secrets, and progression helped establish many of the conventions associated with 3D Zelda games.
HOW OCARINA OF TIME DIFFERS
Ocarina of Time stands apart because of the way it combines traditional Zelda mechanics with a fully 3D world.
Its approach to movement, combat, exploration, targeting, puzzles, and camera control helped define how adventure games could work in three dimensions.
The 2026 version also changes the experience through overhauled visuals, expanded dialogue, voiced cutscenes, symphonic music, and reworked movement and camera controls.
THE 2026 VERSION
The 2026 Nintendo Switch 2 version brings Ocarina of Time back with completely overhauled visuals and updated presentation.
The new version adds voiced cutscenes, expanded character dialogue, symphonic orchestral music, faster load times, smoother performance, remodeled locations, and reworked camera and movement controls.
It also introduces features including Threads of Time, expanded ocarina interaction, and ZELDA NOTES, giving returning players new elements to discover alongside the classic adventure.
